Development critique

A development critique provides feedback to authors seeking clarity and insight for revising their manuscripts.

PRICE: Subject to review of a sample
FORMAT: Microsoft Word doc

I’ll provide a 6-8 page development report with comments in the manuscript which will focus on aspects such as:

  • The opening of your story – does it work?
  • Characterisation – are your characters believable?
  • Pace – does your story drag where it shouldn’t and fly where it should linger?
  • Plot development – is it plausible?
  • Dialogue – is there too much, too little, is it varied, does it feel real?
  • Presentation – is your manuscript well-presented? Is the timeline anchored?
  • Point of view – are you using it consistently?
  • Writing – do you fall into the trap of describing everything that moves?
  • Marketability – does it adhere to the expectations of the genre?
  • Final chapter – does your ending work?

A development critique will enable you to improve your manuscript and take it to the next level.

Full copy-edit

You’re happy with your story and its structure. Now it’s time to focus on readability so that your readers stay engaged.

A full copy-edit retains the integrity of your style and narrative voice to produce a captivating read. I’ll ensure that your writing flows and that your story is what you imagined it could be.

  • Pace and flow: special attention to repetition and overwriting
  • Showing not telling
  • Cliché and awkward metaphors
  • Use of tenses
  • Layout
  • Letter, word, line and paragraph spacing
  • Chapter sequencing
  • Standard document formatting: indentation, paragraph style, section breaks

In addition, I’ll produce a style sheet in which I'll record my decisions about hyphenation, numbering, capitalization, spelling and punctuation style.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final polish which catches any mistakes that have slipped through in the editing process. It is the last pair of eyes on your manuscript.

A novel that’s ready for proofreading will certainly have been copy-edited already. If it hasn’t been through previous rounds of professional editing, this service probably isn’t for you.
